Optiq vs Abridge for healthcare teams

Optiq vs Abridge

Abridge is the heavyweight of ambient clinical documentation. It listens to clinician and patient conversations, drafts the clinical note, and files it inside Epic workflows, with billing codes and orders drafted along the way. It is deployed across hundreds of health systems, signs business associate agreements, and holds SOC 2 Type 2. If the job is documenting patient encounters inside your EHR, Abridge was built for exactly that, and Optiq is not trying to replace it.

Optiq solves a different problem: the AI-shaped work that happens outside the patient encounter. Care teams also draft letters and policies, sit in internal meetings, dig through files, and dictate into a dozen different apps, and today that work often ends up in consumer AI tools with no rules at all. Optiq gives it a private home: chat, dictation, meeting notes, and a local agent that keep data on the device and never train on it.

Choose Abridge if

Abridge is the obvious choice for the job it was built for.

  • You need ambient documentation of patient encounters, filed directly into Epic.
  • You want billing codes, orders, and nursing documentation drafted from the conversation.
  • Your organization buys through formal procurement and needs a signed BAA today.
  • You want a product already proven across hundreds of health systems.

Choose Optiq if

Optiq covers the AI work that happens outside the encounter.

  • Your team needs private chat, dictation, and meeting notes for the rest of the workday.
  • You want that work stored on the device, not in another vendor's cloud.
  • You want AI that never trains on your data, even in de-identified form.
  • You want one tool the whole organization can use, not only clinicians inside the EHR.

Different jobs, honestly stated

Optiq is not an ambient clinical scribe. It does not listen to patient encounters, draft clinical notes, or write anything into an EHR. If that is the job you are hiring for, you want a scribe, and Abridge is one of the best at it: notes drafted during the visit, evidence linked back to the transcript, coding and orders handled inside Epic.

What a scribe does not cover is everything else a healthcare organization does with AI. The referral letter drafted at 6pm, the operations meeting nobody took notes in, the folder of documents someone needs summarized, the quick clinical-adjacent question that ends up typed into a consumer chatbot. That work involves the same sensitive context and usually has the least oversight. Optiq exists to give it the same discipline the encounter gets: on-device storage, zero data retention model calls, and an agent that asks before it acts.

Where the data goes

Abridge is a cloud platform: audio and notes are processed and stored in US data centers on Google Cloud, OpenAI appears on its vendor list, and retention terms live in each health system's contract rather than in a public policy. Abridge is also open about using de-identified data to refine its models and train its clinical foundation models. For an enterprise deployment with a BAA in place, all of that is normal and contractually governed.

Optiq's model is simpler to reason about because there is less to govern. Notes, recordings, transcripts, and agent memory stay in an encrypted database on the device. Model calls go through a confidential backend to private models with zero data retention, and nothing is ever used for training. There is more detail on our security page.

Can you use both?

Yes, and some teams probably should. Abridge and Optiq barely overlap: one documents the patient encounter inside the EHR, the other covers the private chat, dictation, internal meetings, and file work around it. If your health system already runs Abridge, Optiq is not asking you to switch anything. It is asking where the rest of your team's AI usage currently lives, and whether you can account for it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Optiq an alternative to Abridge?

Only for part of the picture. Abridge documents patient encounters inside the EHR; Optiq does not do that job at all. Optiq covers the work around the encounter: private chat, dictation into any app, internal meeting notes, and a local agent. Some organizations will want both.

Does Abridge train AI on patient data?

Abridge states that it uses de-identified data for research and development, to refine its algorithms, and to train its clinical foundation models. Specific terms for a given health system are governed by its customer agreements and BAAs. Optiq never trains on your data in any form.

Is Abridge HIPAA compliant?

Abridge operates as a HIPAA business associate and signs BAAs with its health system customers, and its trust center lists SOC 2 Type 2 and TX-RAMP. Optiq is in private beta and makes no HIPAA claims yet.

Can a small practice buy Abridge?

Abridge sells through an enterprise sales motion with a demo-request form, and it publishes no pricing or self-serve signup. Optiq is rolling out through a private beta with per-seat billing for organizations of any size. Book a demo to see it.
